Frequently Seen Species on our Whale Watching Tours
”[title
Humpback Whales
Humpback whales are baleen whales belonging to the Balaenopteridae family and are estimated to have roamed the oceans for over 65 million years. Humpback whales are by far the favorite for enthusiastic whale watchers and nature lovers.
They are known as the most acrobatic whale that has ever existed. Indeed thanks to their outstanding pectoral fin size combined with their immense agility, they often put on breathtaking displays.
The coasts of Baja California being on the direct pathway of the annual migration of the North Pacific population makes the Sea of Cortez a unique area to witness the humpbacks year after year.
Common Bottlenose Dolphin
In the wild, these sleek swimmers can often reach speeds of over 18 miles an hour. They surface frequently to breathe, doing so two or three times a minute.
Bottlenose dolphins travel in social groups and communicate with each other by a complex system of squeaks and whistles. Schools have even been known to come to the aid of an injured dolphin and help it to the surface.
Bottlenose dolphins track their prey through the expert use of echolocation – they can make up to 1,000 clicking noises per second. These sounds travel underwater until they encounter objects, then bounce back to their dolphin senders, revealing the location, size, and shape of their target.
Mobula Rays
Every year between May and June, thousands of Mobula Rays come to the coasts of Baja California Sur, culminating in one of the largest aggregations of rays on earth – it is so spectacular that it appears in documentaries such as Blue Planet II and National Geographic.
They astound spectators with their incredible acrobatic stunts when they leap out of the water. These creatures can launch themselves six feet above the ocean’s surface. Mobula rays not only jump and spin, but finish by performing a belly flop to land in the water with the biggest splash.
You will cruise out in comfort and speed on our custom built boats, and using the skills of our eagle-eyed captains and guides, find schools of rays. They can be seen from long distances, leaping out of the water in acrobatic displays that are a privilege to witness.
Green Turtle
The green turtle is a large, weighty sea turtle with a wide, smooth carapace, or shell. It inhabits tropical as well as subtropical coastal waters around the world and has been observed clambering onto land to sunbathe.
Sea turtles spend most of their lives submerged in an aquatic environment, but they also can spend significant amounts of time at the surface of the water because they require air to breathe.
Weighing up to 700 pounds green turtles are among the largest sea turtles in the world. Their proportionally small head, which is non retractable, extends from a heart-shaped carapace that measures up to 5 feet. Males are slightly larger than females and have a longer tail, yet both have flippers that resemble paddles, which make them powerful and graceful swimmers.
Eco Friendly
We work hard to protect the environment that we love, therefore we do not provide plastic bottles of water. Instead, you will find containers of purified drinking water with reusable cups on our boats.
Thus, we strongly recommend you to bring your own reusable water bottle to refill as you like. Our oceans are polluted with large amounts of plastic, therefore here at East Cape Explorers we do all we can not to contribute to that problem.
